Parking in Detroit has always been a bit of a gamble. And
this gamble predates the arrival of casinos or even the lottery.
Suburbanites head downtown Detroit by hopping on I-94, I-75
or I-96 and then it's all about I, me, and myself. We take in a ballgame, we
hold our Bic lighters up at a concert, we throw our White Castle trash out of
our car window. Then we head back home.
We hope Detroiters are too busy to worry about us littering,
making U-turns or parking illegally. They’ve got bigger fish to fry, right? I’m
pretty sure Detroit has something like 500 murders to solve each and every
year.
But as of May 16 anyone with three or more outstanding
Detroit parking violations will be unable to renew their driver’s license. It’s
the law, buddy.
Detroit is so desperate for cash that it's willing to
discourage suburbanites from driving into the city. And everyone knows Detroit
cannot exist without the influx of sweet suburbanite cash.
